Le laboratoire de microscopie se compose d'un atelier de fabrication de lames minces et d'une salle d'observation équipée d'un microscope optique et d'un microscope électronique.

Dans cet atelier, les blocs de sols sont imprégnés par de la résine polyester pendant plusieurs semaines, puis tronçonnés et enfin rectifiés pour fabriquer des lames minces de quelques 25 à 30 µm observables soit en microscopie optique, soit en microscopie électronique (un micro-polissage est alors nécessaire).

Le microscope électronique à balayage



Le MEB est d'une ancienne génération, mais il est équipé d'un système automatique permettant l'acquisition des images directement sur l'ordinateur. Il possède un détecteur d'électrons rétrodiffusés.
Un métalliseur associé à ce matériel permet de métalliser à l'or les petits échantillons à regarder en électrons secondaires ou de déposer une couche de carbone sur les lames minces étudiées en rétrodiffusés.
