Vitor Ferreira

Scientific researcher INRAE

In the past years, I have specialized in the field of animal cognition, behavior and welfare. Using the domesticated bird as an animal model (e.g., laying hen,  broiler chicken, quail), I study how these birds perceive and interpret their physical and social environment (in other words, their physical and social cognition). I am also interested in the study of inter-individual differences (personality) in animals, both cognitive and behavioral.

The objective of my research is to broaden the knowledge of cognition and personality in domesticated birds, which, although highly selected over the last decades, have retained some inter-individual variation. In the long term, the objective will be to offer practical ways to develop the farming of tomorrow: adapted environments that appeal to both consumers and animals, because they are adapted to animals' behavioral and cognitive needs, and thus to the improvement of their welfare.
