Olfactory regulation of reproductive behavior: involvement of the signalisation pathways

Among the various olfactory sub-systems found in rodents, we are especially interested by the vomeronasal organ (VNO). It is organized as an olfactory epithelium composed of two layers differing by their molecular equipment, especially by the olfactory receptors and associated G-proteins they express. V1Rs express the G-protein Gαi while V2Rs express Gαo. In this context, we try to explore the contribution of each signaling pathway to the control of reproductive behavior and associated olfactory physiology. To evaluate this raole, we have generated two populations of mice deficient for each type of G-protein (Gαi et Gαo) and we evaluate the behavioral and physiological consequences of each mutations.


We showed that Gαo ablation induces a large number of behavioral deficits. Female mice are for example unable to show lordosis response which signals their sexual receptivity and allows copulation (Oboti et al., BMC Biology, 2014).

Results for Gαi are under investigation.
