Research

Our team’s model is Streptococcus agalactiae, a commensal bacterium of the human intestinal and genital tracts, which cause invasive infections in neonates and immunocompromised adults.

Despite the implementation of prophylactic measures, S. agalactiae remains the major cause of neonatal infections with an overall mortality rate of approximately 10%.
Our main research activities focus on:

  • investigating the genetic diversity of the CRISPR/cas system and the bacteriophage content of S. agalactiae strains, and the potential link to virulence;
  • understanding the regulatory mechanisms governed by carbohydrate metabolism and trace metal acquisition, to define the networks regulating the bacterium adaptation and colonization in various ecological niches;
  • characterizing the bacterium regulatory small RNAs (sRNAs) and understanding their role in physiology regulation, host adaptation and virulence factor expression.
